United Nations concerned over Guinea-Bissau political crisis

Published
The United Nations Security Council has passed a Presidential Statement urging political actors in Guinea Bissau to recognize the urgent need to hold presidential elections on the agreed date of November 24th. The country was again forced into political uncertainty when President Jose Mario Vaz dismissed the government of Prime Minister Artistides Gomes just weeks before the already delayed Presidential poll. This prompted the Economic Community of West Africa States to issue a communiqué calling the move illegal. The Council statement has called on all actors in Guinea-Bissau to fully respect the ECOWAS Heads of State decision from June 29 this year.
