Zimbabwe's Former Finance Minister Chombo Appeals Court's Bail Decision

Published

In Zimbabwe, former finance minister, Ignatius Chombo, is set to appeal his bail decision in the Harare High Court on Tuesday. On Monday, the magistrate denied Chombo bail -- claiming he is a flight risk. The court is also concerned that the former minister could influence state witnesses or be the target of a mob attack. Chombo is charged with corruption for offences allegedly committed in 2004. A known ally of former president Robert Mugabe, he is among several high-profile people detained by the military earlier this month. Chombo's case is set down for the 8th of December. His lawyer maintains there's no reason for him to be held behind bars until then.
