Chad's Moussa Faki Mahamat Becomes New AU Commission Head

Published
African leaders have chosen a new chairperson to head up the AU Commission. Chad's Foreign Minister Moussa Faki Mahamat is taking over from South Africa's Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. Mahamat garnered 39 votes in a hotly contested election. As expected, countries from the West African bloc threw their weight behind Mahamat. But there were some surprises from countries like Uganda and Burundi, who voted for the Chadian instead of East Africa's candidate. Southern African regional bloc SADC reportedly abstained from voting after Botswana's candidate fell out of the race. Mahamat beat Kenya's top diplomat -- Amina Mohamed. However, Kenyan authorities say she'll work closely with Mahamat in his new role. CGTN's Girum Chala has more.
