'Freedom: The Destiny of Shewit' documents young Eritrean woman's pursuit of the life she wants

For ten years, Swiss director Anne-Frédérique Widmann followed Shewit, a 15-year-old girl she met who, after a long journey, arrived in Geneva in pursuit of her freedom.

The director and the young girl found each other: one wanted to give a voice to young girls in exile who are rarely heard, and the other wanted to tell her story and her journey toward emancipation.

“I think we actually chose each other," Widmann told Africanews.

Trial begins for Eritrean man accused of leading brutal migrant smuggling network

A Dutch court opened a trial Monday of an Eritrean man accused of involvement in a brutal migrant smuggling network.

Prosecutors say Tewelde Goitom, also known as Amanuel Walid, ran an operation bringing East African migrants to Europe under horrific conditions, demanding huge sums of money from their relatives to free them from camps in Libya.

The accused, wearing jeans and a blue puffer jacket, said that he is the victim of mistaken identity.

He was extradited to the Netherlands in 2022 from Ethiopia, where he was convicted of similar crimes.

"I am still the one I said I was earlier," he said when asked to introduce himself, speaking via an interpreter.

The trial is one of the largest human smuggling cases ever brought in the Netherlands, prosecutors said. It will continue for the next three weeks.

The trial has been delayed by the lengthy extradition process of another man, Kidane Zekarias Habtemariam, who escaped during the trial in Ethiopia in 2020.

Habtemariam is currently being held in the United Arab Emirates but will be extradited to the Netherlands.

Prosecutors want to join the two cases, while the defense hopes that Habtemariam can provide evidence of Goitom's innocence.

Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has confirmed for the first time that Eritrean troops entered the Ethiopian region of Tigray during the conflict that broke out five months ago, suggesting they may have been involved in abuses against civilians.
Witnesses told Al Jazeera last month they had seen Eritrean forces in Tigray, saying that they had committed egregious crimes while they were there.
Eritrean soldiers have denied ever being in Tigray.

Ethiopians in the northern region of Tigray have told Al Jazeera multiple tales of civilians tortured and killed at the hands of Eritrean soldiers at the end of last year.
Eritrean soldiers deny ever being in Tigray when conflict broke out there in November, but video is circulating showing Eritrean vehicles carrying soldiers in Tigray.
Amnesty International also released a report stating hundreds of civilians were massacred by Eritrean soldiers in the town of Axum in November.

Tigray forces have fired missiles on Asmara, Eritrean capital. Reportedly 3 missiles were fired by Tigray forces which hit Information Ministry building, Airport and a residential complex in Asmara, capital city of Eritrea. Earlier in the day, TPLF ( Tigray People's Liberation Front ) spokesperson Getachew Ruda, in a TV interview, threatened to hit Eritrean cities if Eritrea allegedly kept on backing Ethiopian government forces. Tigray's TPLF accuses Eritrea of backing Ethiopian government forces against Tigray fighters. On November 4, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmad Ali, launched a major offensive into Tigray region of Ethiopia. Tigray region shares border with Eritrea.
