The Ebola death toll in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has risen to 600, with health officials investigating suspected cases in previously unaffected areas. Beyond the rising toll, the outbreak has orphaned numerous children, leaving families and communities to absorb the burden of care.
Eighteen-year-old La Joie Kahindo, who lost both parents to the virus, now raises her younger siblings while grieving. Her story reflects the outbreak's deepening social toll as it spreads further across the region.

Al Jazeera’s Hamza Mohamed reports.
