Guinea Presiding Over Talks To Resolve Impasse In The Gambia

Published
Guinea has now offered to preside over talks to resolve the crisis in The Gambia. Guinean President Alpha Conde has in the recent past said President Yahya Jammeh should not be prosecuted for crimes against the state and human rights abuses as a former African leader. ECOWAS has passed a resolution to use military force to force Jammeh to leave if he refuses to hand over power to Adama Barrow. Gambia's army chief General Ousman Badjie reaffirmed his loyalty to President Yahya Jammeh in the face of a possible regional military intervention to enforce the result of an election that dealt the longtime leader a surprise defeat. Jammeh's mandate ends on Jan. 19.
