Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will also be heading to Madagascar. But ahead of that he paid his first official visit to Liberia. Trudeau has called for the empowerment of women and girls in Liberia. Canada has committed over 11 million dollars towards supporting women's initiatives in West Africa. The funds will also go towards promoting the engagement of women in Liberian politics, and encouraging women's participation in peace and security programmes. Trudeau's government has put gender equity and the empowerment of women and girls at the heart of its international development strategy. The two countries are trying to rekindle relations.
