At least 17 South African citizens, mostly young men aged between 20 and 39, have reportedly joined mercenary forces in the Russia‑Ukraine conflict and are now said to be stranded in the war-torn Donbas region.

According to the Presidency, these men were lured by promises of lucrative contracts and now find themselves in serious danger.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered an investigation into how these young men were recruited, condemning the exploitation of vulnerable citizens.
