President Cyril Ramaphosa says Africa should not be blamed for global climate damage, pointing to the continent's low contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, despite being among the regions most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

The president has praised countries that are taking proactive steps to combat climate change, including investments in renewable energy and the adoption of sustainable development practices.

Ramaphosa says South Africa has adopted a dual approach, aimed at promoting economic growth, while at the same time addressing climate change and environmental sustainability.

He was speaking on the sidelines of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Summit.

The president is on an official visit to the United Arab Emirates from the 12th to the 13th of January 2026, at the invitation of UAE President, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
