A funeral was held on Saturday in Bujumbura for Burundi's former head of the intelligence services and a key ally of the president. Lieutenant General Adolphe Nshimirimana was killed by unknown assailants, who shot rocket-propelled grenades at his car in Bujumbura earlier this month. When the ruling party signed a ceasefire with the Burundian government in 2003, Lieutenant General Adolphe Nshimirimana became the Burundian army deputy-chief of staff and from September 2005 to November 2014, he was the east African country's intelligence chief. Nshimirimana was known to have played a key role in neutralizing protests against President Pierre Nkurunziza's third term bid from late April to June. He also played a major role in battling coup plotters, who attempted to overthrow President Pierre Nkurunziza and his government on May 13th.
