Central African Republic: Voters queue to cast ballots in elections in Bangui

Published
Voters were seen queuing at a polling station to cast their ballots in the Central African Republic's presidential and legislative elections in Bangui on Sunday.

President Faustin Archange Touadera who is seeking the second term, also came to the polling station to vote, saying, ''I believe that the right way for the development, for the development and well-being of our country and our peoples, is democracy: the free choice of leaders by the people.''

Touadera's main challenger is former prime minister Anicet Georges Dologuele.

According to the UN mission in the country quoted in media, the turnout seemed to be significant despite armed groups' efforts to disrupt the elections by opening fire in some areas.

SOT, Faustin Archange Touadera, President of the Republic of Central Africa (French): "I believe that the right way for the development, for the development and well-being of our country and our peoples, is democracy: the free choice of leaders by the people. Refusing this right, preventing them from expressing what they want, is serious. It is perpetuating violence. It is dragging the country into chaos."

SOT, Faustin Archange Touadera, President of the Republic of Central Africa (French): "You know that we have a constitution, we are a democratic state, and the constitution is that every five years, Central Africans freely choose their leaders. The institutions responsible for this mission are the ANE (National Elections Authority) and the Constitutional Court. The date that has been set is the 27th, that's why all Central Africans come to vote, and I even come to fulfill my civic duty."

SOT, Faustin Archange Touadera, President of the Republic of Central Africa (French): "I very much thank President Paul Kagame, the Rwandan government, the Rwandan people for their support in securing this process that will allow Central Africans to choose their leaders freely."
