The Competition Commission has released findings and sweeping remedies of its Media and Digital Platforms Market Inquiry, which aims to hold global tech giants accountable for practices that have eroded the financial base of local news media. The inquiry found that digital platforms often extract news content produced by news media organisations without fair compensation. Chairperson of the Inquiry, James Hodge, says the report and remedies represent a landmark step toward rebalancing digital markets, protecting fair competition, and rebuilding the long-term sustainability of South Africa's news media.
