The commissioner for political affairs, peace and security of ECOWAS says the regional organisation is still hopeful that Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger will join forces with other West African countries to fight terror and extremism in West Africa.

The three nations have established an alliance in the Sahel region after breaking away from ECOWAS.

Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah told SABC News in an exclusive interview that ECOWAS is strengthening its capacity to deal with regional challenges.
