Taxi operators and associations have signed a safety pledge at the Wanderers long-distance taxi rank in Johannesburg, ahead of the busy festive travel period.

With the majority of holidaymakers expected to leave Gauteng today, the rank is set to experience a surge in passenger numbers as people travel home for Christmas.

Authorities and the taxi industry say the pledge is aimed at ensuring safer roads and reliable transport during one of the year's busiest travel weekends.
