The International Criminal Court in The Hague has given a 20-year prison sentence to a Sudanese militia leader convicted in October of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Ali Muhammad Ali Abd al-Rahman, also known as Ali Kasheib, was found guilty on 27 counts, including murder, torture and rape.

The presiding judge said 76-year-old Al-Rahman had personally carried out beatings and ordered executions during a brutal campaign marked by humiliation, killings and mass displacement. Prosecutors had pushed for a life sentence.
