Is Algeria about to become a 'New Republic'?

Published
Algeria's president is among those who say the country become a 'New Republic' if a majority of people support a draft constitution in a referendum on November 1.

Abdelmadjid Tebboune and his supporters say the powers of the prime minister and parliament will be enhanced, answering demands of pro-democracy protesters who in April 2019 succeeded in forcing the resignation of then-president Abdelaziz Bouteflika. But critics of the draft are unimpressed - and say it is a thinly-disguised attempt by the president to hold on to power under the guise of political reform.

As referendum day draws near, The Stream looks at what people in Algeria think about the proposed changes - and what's next for the country.
