Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says her department needs R1.6 billion rand to refurbish the country's dilapidated courts, but Treasury has only allocated R600 million due to budget constraints.

Kubayi was speaking at the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Departments of Justice and Public Works, and the non-profit organisation Jozi My Jozi, aimed at refurbishing the High Court in Johannesburg.

Deputy Public Works Minister Sihle Zikalala said the partnership is the first of many collaborations between government, the private sector, and civil society to restore key public institutions.
