The Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association says it decided on the route and date for this year's Minstrel Street Parade for practical and strategic reasons, while preserving the heritage of the "klopse", as it's known. The street parade and the first day of the minstrel competition will take place on the fifth of January this year. The parade will start in Somerset Road, in Green Point, and proceed to the Cape Town Stadium. It traditionally takes place on the second of January, or Tweede Nuwejaar, dating back to times of slavery at the Cape. It was the day slaves got off from work to celebrate the new year. The colourful parade draws tens of thousands of spectators each year, and is a permanent fixture on Cape Town's festive season calendar.
