As the country was celebrating the New Year, an undisclosed number of illegal miners were still underground at shaft 11. This after police began their operation against illegal mining, called Vala Umgodi in the area a few months earlier.
This saw the blocking of the supply of food and other essentials to scores of illegal mineworkers underground, which led to pressure being put on government to begin rescue operations to extract illegal miners.
