A memorial service was held in Brakpan on the East Rand, for Marius van der Merwe, who testified before the Madlanga Commission as "Witness D".

Van der Merwe was gunned down in front of his wife and children earlier this month (December 2025).

Just weeks before he was killed, he testified before the Madlanga Commission about the alleged rot in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department.
