Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube confirmed that more than 32 000 teachers left South Africa's public schooling system over the past five years in a recent written reply to a parliamentary question from BOSA leader Dr Mmusi Maimane.

South Africa's teacher crisis is a complex interplay of an ageing workforce approaching retirement, significant resignations driven by poor working conditions, and systemic issues in recruitment and retention within public schools.
