South Africa has experienced a dramatic rise in illegal land occupations since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In Cape Town, authorities have dealt with more than 1,000 incidents over the past year.
But critics say their approach has been unsympathetic and, at times, heavy handed.
Al Jazeera's Robyn Smith reports from Cape Town.
