KwaZulu-Natal National Freedom Party Chairperson, Mbali Shinga has been placed on immediate suspension.

Shinga's suspension comes after she openly defied party instruction to support a motion of no-confidence vote against premier Thamsanqa Ntuli last week.

Shinga who serves as the MEC for social development in the KZN provincial cabinet is the sole member of the provincial legislature from the NFP.

The party says it has instituted disciplinary processes against her and she has been barred from party activities.

Shinga has indicated that she's consulting with her legal team to challenge the decision.
