Climate change negatively, and disproportionately, affects African countries in ecological transition areas, where grasslands gradually become desert. In the Sahel, climate change has caused the Sahara Desert to encroach on once fertile grazing lands for herders and subsistence farmers. While this year saw unusually good rains, herders in Senegal are weary of celebrating too soon. Meanwhile in South Africa, urban developers are tackling power shortages and wasteful use of resources by changing construction styles to be more environmentally friendly.
