Thirty years after 19 African National Congress supporters were slain on Christmas Day at Shobashobane on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, survivors say their wounds haven't yet healed.

The killings on the 25th of December 1995, which became known as the Christmas Day massacre, saw a large mob of alleged Inkatha Freedom Party supporters launch an early morning attack on mainly ANC supporters of the rural community of Shobashobane, who were shot or hacked to death and their homes burnt down.

It was one of the worst single cases of political violence since South Africa's first democratic election in April 1994.

Violent conflict between the ANC and IFP in the preceding decade is estimated to have claimed more than 20 thousand lives.
