Questions have been raised about how a competitive electricity tariff could be funded for South African chrome producers and ferrochrome smelters.

This, as industry players argue that the cost of power is the real cause of the sector's decline, not ore prices.

In a joint statement, the Minerals Council South Africa and the Ferro Alloy Producers Association have rejected the introduction of a chrome ore export tax.

Chief Operating Officer at Tharisa Michelle Taylor says engagements with the government are ongoing.
