It's been a tough year for South Africa too. A depressed global environment and sliding commodities prices have weighed heavily on the mining industry in particular, resulting in widespread job losses and mine closures, with more to come. And if Africa's second largest economy fails to steady the ship soon, it may follow Brazil and be downgraded to junk.
