South Sudan struggles to unify divided forces

The formation of a unified national security force is a critical element in South Sudan’s transition to peace.
The transitional unity government formed last year saw President Salva Kiir again trying to work with former rebel leader Riek Machar, who is now the first vice president.
On paper, the two politicians have agreed to combine their individual armies and loyalists but the rival forces are yet to be integrated.
