Three people have died after drowning in three separate incidents since New Year's Day as torrential rain batters Mpumalanga.

Two people were swept away crossing a bridge in Low's Creek near Barberton, while a 12-year-old drowned in Middelburg.

And a search is ongoing for a 27-year-old man from Ekulindeni.

The rain coupled with strong winds and hail have left a trail of destruction in various municipalities.

Over one hundred houses have been affected in Pienaar, and a school in Bushbuckridge have been damaged.
