The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres says human rights are inalienable, indivisible and interdependent but warned that recent years had brought a shrinking of civic space coupled with grave violations that signalled their flagrant disregard and a callous indifference to human suffering. In a statement marking Human Rights Day, Guterres called for institutions that make human rights a lived reality to be protected. The High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk echoed these sentiments urging governments around the world to harness the energy of social and rights movements, while warning that anti-rights and gender movements were increasingly coordinated and well-funded.
