The United Nations Development Programme in South Africa has launched a new digital initative the Digital Innovation for Modernising the Independent Economy, to modernise township businesses.
The initiative includes the launch of the Sphazamisa app, aimed at providing Spaza shops with a digital identity.
The UNDP says the initiative positions the country's sprawling spaza and small-retail network as a bankable "independent economy" worth up to R1.1 trillion.
