Crisis In Juba Overshadows AU Summit

Published
The crisis in South Sudan will likely feature prominently at the AU leadership summit. President Salva Kiir has been calling for talks with his rival Vice President Riek Machar. That comes after hundreds of people were killed in renewed clashes in the capital, Juba. A ceasefire was called earlier in the week. But the UN mission in the country UNMISS says it's unlikely that will last long. President Kiir has also rejected a proposal to deploy an intervention force within UNMUSS to protect civilians. Local politicians have been calling for both leaders to resign.
