Africa's oldest liberation movement, the African National Congress turns 114 today.

The party fought for the liberation of South Africa from 1912 but was only able to atttain freedom in 1994.

The party governed the country for 30 years with absolute majority.

However, It lost its parliamentary majority in a historic election result in 2024.

Sophie Mokoena looks back at a tradition of having a January 8 message during the exile years and post 1994.
