The Western Cape Traffic Law Enforcement authority has issued a stern warning to motorists as the festive season draws to a close.
Numerous road blocks have been conducted and the authority says these activities will intensify over the next week.
The majority of people leaving and returning to the province, will do so on the N1 highway.
Drunk driving, fatigue and driver behaviour are among the leading causes of accidents, with pedestrians still accounting for the largest number of fatalities.
Most fatal crashes take place between 4 o'clock in the afternoon and 6 o'clock in the morning.
Officials say this as a result of a numerous issues, including impatience, speeding and not resting enough before or during a long journey.
Close to 200-thousand vehicles have been stopped, inspected and searched since the start of the festive season
