The Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) lifted sanctions against Mali after the military junta there announced plans to return the country to civil rule in 2 years. The bloc however upheld the suspensions of Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea as members.
The three countries were suspended after military juntas staged coups that toppled their democratic governments.
Following the lifting of the sanctions, West African countries can now reopen their borders to Mali and Burkina Faso, to allow cross border trade. Their financial assets will also be unblocked.
