This time of the year is not only a celebration of Christmas or the new year, it is also a special time for families welcoming home the young men who have completed the traditional rite of passage in becoming men as part of the Xhosa culture. The homecoming, or Mgidi, is a huge celebration. The AmaBomvana and AmaBhaca in the Eastern Cape also put in huge effort to ensure the young men go through the process unscathed.
