The Department of Correctional Services says the number of women in prison has risen to more than 5 000- the highest it's ever been in the country.

Officials visited Durban's Westville Correctional facility for the Babies Behind Bars Christmas initiative.

At least 70 female inmates are currently living with their babies in prisons across the country.
