Special Investigation Unit conducted a raid in a suspect's house at Scottburgh, south of KwaZulu-Natal. This is in connection with an ongoing investigation relating to the embezzlement of UIF funds. The individual is suspected to have illegally received about R18 million.
The search is mainly being conducted throughout the country, mainly in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
SIU Spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago says they discovered that R161 million has been distributed amongst sixteen companies and 35 individuals that are part of a syndicate.
Kganyago says one of the searches is being conducted at the UIF Head Offices as investigations reveal that these individuals were assisted by UIF employees.
