The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed his shock following reports of violence and excessive use of force by the Iranian authorities against protesters in multiple locations across the Islamic Republic of Iran. This has resulted in scores of deaths and many more injured in recent days. Some estimates put the current death toll at between 500 and several thousands. Protests have gripped the nation since late December over dire economic conditions that has broadened into a mass movement against Iran's repressive government.
