The Verulam temple collapse site has now been declared a crime scene and handed over for criminal and labour department investigations. Preliminary findings show the building collapsed while concrete was being poured on the upper levels of the multi-storey structure.
Investigators have identified several shortcomings, including crumbly concrete, voids in samples, and the apparent absence of concrete vibrators, which are critical to structural strength. Authorities say the construction was unlawful, unauthorised, unsupervised and carried out without approved building plans.
This tragedy follows a similar deadly building collapse in George last year. Concerns have also been raised about broader weaknesses in regulating the built environment. To discuss more on this, we are joined by the CEO of the Council for the Built Environment, Dr Msizi Myeza.
