Although Idriss Deby led with an authoritarian grip for 30 years, western nations saw him as a crucial ally.
Deby was killed near the northern border with Libya while leading troops battling a rebel group.
The military has appointed his son as interim leader.
So what's next for Chad and the fight for stability in the Sahel?
