The Independent Electoral Commission is proposing a number of amendments to the Electoral Act ahead of next year's Local Government elections. The local polls are scheduled between November 2026 and no later than January 2027. The proposals include, automatically de-registering unrepresented political parties that fail to notify the Chief Electoral Officer of their continued existence by the prescribed date amongst other things. The IEC briefed the media on its preparations ahead of the polls at its headquarters in Centurion, outside Pretoria.
