The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a three-year extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act after the bipartisan voice vote, followed by a roll call vote, confirming that the legislation passed by a two-thirds majority.
The bill, that would see AGOA extended until December 2028, now goes to the Senate for further action.
The House and Ways Committee passed the legislation through committee with strong bipartisan support in December, arguing that the extended lapse of AGOA since the end of September would create a void that actors like China and Russia would seek to fill.
Sherwin Bryce-Pease reports that even if AGOA's re-authorisation in signed into law, it would not override the reciprocal tariffs imposed on African nations by the White House.
