The death toll of initiates during the current summer initiation season in the Eastern Cape, has risen to twenty. Traditional Affairs MEC Zolile Williams revealed this during a press briefing in East London. Thirteen of the deaths occurred at legal initiation schools, while seven were at illegal initiation camps. The provincial government is calling on communities that practise traditional circumcision to protect this cultural rite of passage from those who exploit it for personal gain.
