The death toll in the Eastern Cape's summer initiation season has risen to twenty. The provincial government is calling on communities that practise traditional circumcision to protect this cultural rite of passage from those who exploit it for personal gain.

COGTA MEC Zolile Williams revealed during a press briefing in East London that thirteen of the deaths occurred at legal initiation schools, while seven were at illegal initiation camps.

SABC reporter Sidima Mfeku spoke to the MEC.
