A "grave time" is how the United Nations Chief António Guterres described it, in remarks to the Security Council on Venezuela.

He said he is deeply concerned that rules of international law have not been respected with regard to the 3 January military action by the United States.

The UN Charter enshrines the prohibition of the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.

So the big question is, what precedent has Donald Trump set and who can or should police the superpower? And what assessment can be made of South Africa's diplomatic response to events in Venezuela and to threats of other invasions around the world?
