The Department of Agriculture has issued an alert to the public about high-risk rabies areas, where the disease occurs in dogs, Cape fur seals and other mammals. With the festive season fast approaching and holiday makers going to the coast, caution has been advised when coming into contact with seals, especially in the Western Cape. Rabies in the Cape fur seal population was first reported in 2024 and has been reported all along the province's coastline. The deadly viral disease affects all mammals and can spread to humans.
